Every gal with an unruly shopping habit can relate to the story of Sarah-Marie Land, owner of the new St. Louis boutique, The Golden Fig, a curated collection of new and pre-loved women’s clothing. Situated on the corner of Olive and N. Cardinal, Land opened The Golden Fig to give credence and purpose to her shopping habit, specifically her knack for finding incredible deals.
Let me explain. Land’s business model is unique in the sense that she sources her inventory from places accessible to you or I – think eBay, Nordstrom Rack, garage sales, etc. – but scores them at such rock-bottom prices that she can still sell them at a huge discount AND turn a profit. So like a resale or consignment boutique there is only one of everything- no size or color runs here – but unlike most resale shops, over half of Land’s inventory is “new with tags.”
Inside The Golden Fig, located in St. Louis’ mid-town neighborhood.
What you’ll find in this light-filled corner shop in the heart of Midtown are brands like Theory, Alice and Olivia, Marc Jacobs and James Perse. There’s also a very healthy supply of denim – from the likes of J Brand, and Joe’s – but instead of the $200 price tags you’d see at most department stores, denim prices at The Golden Fig usually top out at $65.
Land started her resale venture a year ago, but in the beginning was exclusively doing pop-up shops at area businesses. It wasn’t until last Fall, when she stumbled upon what she perceived to be the perfect real estate, that she was inspired to open a brick and mortar store. This is a lofty undertaking for anyone, but especially courageous considering Land is basically a one-woman shop: she sources, markets and staffs the shop by herself.

When not at The Golden Fig, Land stays busy by caring for her 4 month old, teaching a French course at St. Louis Community College and doing freelance photography. She takes annual trips to France with her Missouri State University students, a voyage that provides inspiration both for her love of photography and her boutique back home. For example, after falling in love with French brands such as Claudie Pierlot and Jonak, Land was frustrated that she couldn’t find these labels anywhere in St. Louis, so sourced the items herself and now carries them in her boutique.
For now, The Golden Fig is a part time endeavor, and the hours reflect that. It is open Fridays from 12-6 and Saturdays from 10-4, as well as by appointment. Land also hosts private shopping parties (yep, as good as it sounds – you bring the guests … at least 6 people … and Land provides the wine and lite bites. Easy as that!) and occasionally opens for pop-up events during non- business hours. Take for example this weeks event, a collaboration with the eco-friendly St. Louis based nail polish line, K.Ferrara Color. It will be held Thursday, April 26, from 5-7:30, all are welcome.
